Freemason's Hall in London

Our history

Named after the esteemed surgeon and dedicated Mason, Dr James Griffith Hall, the Lodge was suggested by DepProvGM, WBro Marmaduke Tenant. Dr. Hall, born in 1814, was known for his caring nature and commitment to helping others. Trained at Guy's Hospital in London, he gained recognition for making 1,380 house visits in 1851 alone. He served the Swansea Infirmary for over 50 years, eventually becoming a local magistrate. In recognition of his remarkable service, the Committee of Management of Swansea Hospital presented him with an Illuminated Address in August 1890, expressing deep appreciation for his skill, attention, and kindness. This historic Illuminated Address is proudly displayed in the Lounge of the Swansea Masonic Hall. Dr. Hall's legacy extends beyond his medical career, as he left £500 towards the construction of a new operating theatre at the Swansea Hospital.

On July 19, 1906, under the banner bearing the motto "In Deo Confidamus" ("In God we Trust"), the Dr James Griffith Hall Lodge was consecrated in the Swansea Masonic Temple. The consecration was led by the DepProvGM due to the unavoidable absence of the Provincial Grand Master, the Lord Llangattock. The lodge was sponsored by Caradoc Lodge, with 13 of its members among the 23 founders. WBro W.J. Treharne served as the first master, and the festive board following the ceremony took place at the Metropole Hotel on Wind Street in Swansea.

Over the years, the Lodge witnessed a gradual increase in initiation ceremonies, particularly after the Second World War, when up to nine candidates were initiated during the Masonic Year. Many of these initiates were commercial travelers who spent most of their week away from home and family.

Charity holds great importance for our Lodge. Just four months after its consecration, the Dr James Griffith Hall Lodge made its first donation to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys, demonstrating its commitment to supporting worthy causes.

In 1910, WBro E.L. Thomas, the Lodge's Master, alongside WBro H.J. Walliker, Master of Loyal Commercial Lodge No. 2720 in Cardiff, initiated the tradition of reciprocal visits between the two Lodges. These visits have continued uninterrupted for over 100 years, overcoming various challenges such as transportation difficulties during the two war periods and the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in the early 1960s.

The Dr James Griffith Hall Lodge has also sponsored the foundation of other Lodges, including the Lodge of St Cenydd, No. 6567, in September 1947, and the Clyne Lodge No. 9049 in 1982. The Lodge has maintained annual exchange visits with both St Cenydd Lodge and Clyne Lodge.

A cherished annual event of the Lodge is the Candlelight Ceremony, held on the third Saturday in December. This beautiful ceremony, followed by carol singing, has become a tradition. We are proud to be the only Lodge in Swansea that performs this enchanting ceremony. WBro Vernon Probert has conducted the Ceremony of the Candles for many years as the Chaplain, while WBro Geraint Morgan has led the carol singing. Thanks to their dedication and the popularity of the ceremony, we regularly have between 120 and 150 attendees on this special night.

In 2006, the Dr James Griffith Hall Lodge celebrated its centenary, an occasion graced by the presence of the RWProvincial Grand Master, RWBro Hywel Davies, and his Provincial team. The Master at that time, WBro I.R. Lewis Jones, welcomed the RWProvincial Grand Master to the lodge, and it was a great honor for the brethren to receive their Centenary Jewel from him.

We invite you to explore the rich history and traditions of the Dr James Griffith Hall Lodge and join us in our commitment to brotherhood, charity, and Masonic principles.
